About The Dead Letter Department

The Dead Letter Department is a BBS, or Bulletin Board System setup by me, Craig Hutchison, for the public use of Amiga users.

The Dead Letter Department carries many informative mail areas, with the focus being on the Amiga computer. It also has a comprehensive range of new Public Domain and Shareware archives, sourced daily from Aminet.

I had, even after setting up The Dead Letter Department, been using my Amiga A1000 with a later model replacement motherboard, to access many of the Bulletin Boards in and around Melbourne. I was also "Pointing" from a BBS called "North West Amiga" and learning about Fidonet Network Technology.

When The Dead Letter Department came into existence, it was running on the A1000, but as my demands on the machine became greater, I found I was regularly running low on free memory. To alleviate the problem, I bought a secondhand A2000 and promptly went looking for an accelerator which would allow me to add more RAM to my configuration. To this end, I eventually purchased a Blizzard2060. This gave me the fastest available 680x0 processor and the ability to add upto 128Mb of (cheap) 32 pin SIMMS.

From there, I started importing files directly from Aminet, for my users, as well as moving Fidonet and Amiganet echomail through encoded email.

Connections to The Dead Letter Department can only be made through the Public Switched Telephone Network on the number: +61 3 9571 7194. File Requests are available to anyone employing an FTN mailer and new users on the BBS side are made extremely welcome.

The Dead Letter Department is now the official support BBS for the members of

The

The Amiga Users Group Inc.
