Tibooburra to Camerons Corner and the Strzelecki Track
|
|
Tibooburra with a population of about 150 is the main business centre of the Corner Country. They serve a good cold beer at the pub as well. National Parks have an information centre in town. There's a good campsite just north of town set amongst very large boulders with a picturesque walking track nearby. The road to the corner gate is sandy and has lots of bulldust in parts. Fort Grey campsite has good facilities for a break before travelling the next section.
The road from Camerons Corner to Merty Merty has good and bad sections. One tends to get a little car sick from the continual rollercoaster effect of crossing sand dunes as there are lots of them. Whenever you see a red flag "take care" and keep left. Because you can't always see what is on the other side.
Driving becomes easier after Merty Merty turnoff as we continue to the Strzelecki Track intersection. We turn south for the leg down to Lyndhurst. The road conditions change to a wide, fairly well maintained gravel surface. You tend to become aware of the amount of discarded tyre carcases the further you go. It pays to be well prepared as the next service centre is 250km away. The track becomes boring as there is little change in scenery except mirages, sand and more sand, until you spot Montecollina Bore. This is truly an oasis in the desert being the only artesian bore between Innamincka and Lyndhurst. Time for a stopover and a nice cool swim. The daytime temperatures are 30 to 40 degrees celsius and throughout the night high 20s. We sleep in a screen tent under a picnic table shelter to get some relief from the flies and the heat.
Next we are heading to Lyndhurst where the Strzelecki meets the Oodnadatta Track, then onto Marree to join the Birdsville Track for our run north.
