Our journey takes us north along the Cordillo Downs track. This section of
road is extremely rocky and care must be taken with tyres. The further we progress the road deteriorates until it becomes sandy and in parts boggy. The area has copped some rain recently and could be impassable if there is more to come. We decide to leave this track and head to Arrabury Station, cross over the border and camp out somewhere near Planet Downs. No sooner had we set up the tent when in the distance we saw the telltale signs of a storm approaching. Luckily the rain skirted around us, but it was a very windy night. Next day we pushed onto Birdsville.
The town was a pleasant surprise, there was green grass on the sports ground and water in abundance. After checking in and pitching camp at the caravan park we walked the town. It was good to have civilization after so many days out bush. Next day we visited the Working Museum and the Local Pub. Both a must when in Birdsville.
We decide after passing through so many cattle properties and seeing as much written about Sir Sidney "The Cattle King" Kidman. We should head further north along the Diamantina River and maybe visit the Stockman's Hall of Fame at Longreach. Continuing past Cacoory ruins, we followed station tracks to Monkira and Davenport Downs into the Diamantina Gates National Park. Another oasis in near desert surroundings.
After camping out for nearly a month we are looking forward to some creature comforts and bitumen roads. We head to Windorah for an overnight stop camped beside Cooper Creek, before heading to Longreach for the trek home. It's been an experience and fulfills a long time dream.
