a Toho 4x5 camera

Quick list of what's in here?

As well, I've started to put up several articles on my personal blog (to save space here, and for quicker / easier publishing). There you can find stuff like

I've even got stuff about a couple of Bessa 120 6x9 film cameras up there too.

What is digital photography?

well in my opinion its any photography where the image becomes digital at some stage. For me this can be at any stage of the processing. Just to keep things in order I've got my general photography pages here.

People think that digital cameras are somehow different to film cameras, aside from the fact that a film camera produces an intermediate stage that can be used for a variety of applications (including storage and digitising).

All cameras share a common design, they have:

So, having said that up front, I only use 'non-digital' processes thesedays when I am contact printing (or the very rare 35mm black and white darkroom stuff).

As recently as 2004, people used to ask (with good reasons)"is digital as good as film?"

I think that the question is turned around these days, with (for most people)the valid question to ask being:

"can I get as good a result with film as a digital camera?"

Of course the answer to that is YES , but don't go out and buy a 35mm film camerainstead of a digital if you don't have any camera now.

Digital imaging has so much taken over photography that people don't seemto know even much about film anymore, and in some ways perhaps even about generalphotographic concepts. 5 mega pixel (MP) cameras giving reasonableresults for most people so why would anyone even use film these days?

Especially if you have a desire to get at your images soon after taking ,digital allows you to photograph what you want and get results up on themonitor in moments. Most cameras allow you to check the exposure onthe spot with blinking washed out highlights and histograms showingyou your exposure errors (for those who know what to do with them.

If I were able to afford it, I would probably get a camera that had a "fullframe" 35mm sensor, but in the meantime the "best camera"I have is the Canon 10D which has a smaller APS sized sensor. Since I have bothI recently decided that I should test the film capture camera with the 10D and see if I wanted to keep using the 35mm film camera.

While the 10D is a damn nice camera, I've decided that for travelling and hikingthat I get better milage out of a compact camera
