Canon ELPH Jr performance Introduction Early January 1999 I purchased a Canon ELPH Jr (also marketed as the Canon IXUS L1), I was immediately curious to determine how capable its fast fixed lens was so I set out on the evening of the 25th and shot a roll of film using the late afternoon and evening light armed only with a mono pod for support and the flash system disabled. Using the index print Six of the images on the index sheet below are available to be viewed in full at a 800dpi (approx. 890 x 510 pixels/100kB) and a section at 4000dpi (600 x 400 pixels/~50kB). To access the high resolution images click on the index print frames 9,13,14,17,19,and 23.
Method and equipment Canon ELPH Jr was loaded with Kodak Advantix 400 25exp film, the flash system was disabled using the flash mode control on the camera side. The ELPH Jr specifications suggest it has a low light sensitivity of EV0 at 400ISO or 2 seconds at f2.8 with the flash disabled. The camera was mounted on a Manfrotto mono pod and hand steadied for images 01 through 18. Images 19 through 25 were hand held only. The film was digitised using a Polaroid SprintScan 4000 film scanner at 4000dpi. The images were not gamma corrected or sharpened (image 23 was colour corrected). Conclusion The Canon ELPH Jr has proven to be a useful tool for low light photography if one is accepting of the APS format caveats and prepared to sacrifice some enlargement potential through the use of fast film. There is next to no shutter backlash with this camera so if no stabilising tool is available the camera could simply be placed on a steady object and the time delayed shutter release used to capture relatively blur free low light photographs.
