Kerry James divides her time between Ballarat and Tonga , where she has done years of social research but now writes about the crime-solving propensities of her fictional character Detective Chief Inspector Kuli Finau of the Tonga Police Force.

Kerry is working on a book-length manuscript featuring DCI Kuli Finau and his sometime help and hindrance, a middle-aged Australian woman researcher, Dr Pip Carey, who is frequently a nuisance to Kuli and gets in the way of the local constabulary, and is therefore absolutely nothing like her.
