The new pavilion of the reformed Cheriton CC was opened in 1951 by the cricket author and commentator John Arlott who lived in nearby Alresford. Cheriton has always played friendly Sunday cricket in the traditional declaration style. The club has always had local roots with a majority of the players from the village and close links and sponsorship from The Flower Pots Inn which is located opposite the picturesque ground. The club joined the Winchester and Evening District League in 1993 and won division 3 the following year. In 1996 the club were runners-up in the Igglesden Cup, while in 1997 the club went one better winning the Chawton Challenge for the first time. The club also plays touring sides which in recent years have included VRA from Amsterdam, Merion CC and Haverford College from Philadelphia, InverMass from Canada and sides from Kent and Devon. Cheriton themselves have made regular mid-season tours to Bedfordshire and Somerset. The club also has close links with Hampshire Wayfarers CC who recently toured Canada and the USA reaching the final of the Philadelphia Cricket Festival. Cheriton is their home ground. A highlight of every season is the Cheriton Cricket, Beer and Ballon Festival which is held over late August Bank Holiday weekend. Cheriton Brewhouse sponsor the popular Cheriton 6s competition which is now in its sixth year and was won for the first time by the home club in 1998. Anyone who enjoys playing true village cricket and making use of our close association with the local pub is very welcome to join Cheriton CC. |
