At the time of Christ lived two girls named Miriam.   They were cousins and both were cousins of Jesus. Both were named after their Aunt Miriam, the mother of Jesus. 

The elder girl was the sister of John the Apostle and was called Miriam.  The younger girl by 13 months was called Mirri to avoid confusion.
